Hexion – Combined Composite Technologies LTD

The Challenge

Combined Composite Technologies Limited (CCT) a subsidiary of Hexion opened a new 44,000 sq. ft. (4088m2) composite design and manufacturing facility in Segensworth at the end of 2012.

For over 55 years, CCT has been providing high-quality composite tooling, structures, fixtures and components to aerospace, automotive and defense industry customers.

The move to Segensworth  enabled CCT to become a fully integrated “design and build” composite tooling supplier, offering design, stress analysis, master model production, tooling design and production, material selection and final component production capabilities in one location.

LED By Vision approached CCT further to energy reduction and LED lighting projects already underway in Hampshire. The main concern presented by CCT was in relation to the amount of electricity being consumed on site, therefore our support was required to understand how to mitigate without impacting BAU activities. Furthermore, there was a requirement to increase the lighting levels across highlighted areas.

We enabled a full and objective business case to be designed that highlighted how electricity consumption in respect of lighting could be reduced by up to 80% whilst achieving required lighting levels in specific areas. This was directly in tune with the overall objective which was reduce electricity consumption across the site.

As the facilities officer I was initially tasked with reducing energy costs. As the lighting was a large part of the costs I decided to look at reducing that cost and contacted a number of companies to assist in the project. LED by Vision became the chosen company.  They made a number of sites visits and liaised with myself and the quality inspector as the inspection area needed to increase the lighting level above replacing the light fitting already there. All requests were responded to promptly and queries were quickly resolved therefore enabling us progress quickly with project.

The installation took place over 2 weekends as there were 78 sodium lights to be replaced and the installation of 2 extra in the inspection areas.

After the first weekend when only half the lights had been replaced I was getting good feedback from the operatives about the improved lighting.

This prompted a trial of LED panels in the clean room, which will be followed up with a full installation in February 2016
