High Bay vs Low Bay LED Lighting

The vast, open spaces of a warehouse building or distribution centre require suitable illumination so items can be identified and workers can navigate easily and without a risk to their safety. Upgrading your traditional warehouse lighting with LED lighting is a simple and efficient way to improve worker morale and reduce your companies energy consumption.

Lighting is responsible for up to 20% of all energy consumption in the UK according to The Carbon Trust. For a business, The Carbon Trust suggests that this figure for lighting can rise to 40%. With the price of LED lighting dropping dramatically in the last few years and improvements in their quality, they are the logical choice.

What’s the difference between LED High Bay and LED Low Bay lighting?

LED High Bay Lighting

High Bays are designed to be used in very high areas, 8m+, to provide well distributed and consistent light for open, spacious areas. A particular consideration for use with a high bay is if it can light vertical surfaces as well as it can illuminate the floor. In warehouses, vertical lighting is particularly important as it is where items are required to be picked from a shelf.

LED Low Bay Lighting

Low Bays work mostly in the same way as a high bays however, they are best suited to lower mounting heights. Lens angles are also used to further spread the lighting. By using these lens angles to direct the lighting in specific places, sometimes less low bay lights are needed.

The Difference

In short, the height in which these lights are used is the main difference in terms of their application differences. For technical differences, there are two main things: lumen output and how they direct their light.

The bulb intensity and lumen output will vary. The low bay lights will have a very high bulb intensity, as high bay lights have more room for the light to diffuse before reaching the ground.

Choosing the right LED Bay fitting matters because using the wrong fixture (high bay in a low-ceiling area, or a low bay in a high-ceiling area) can result in unnecessary costs along with under-lit (or over-lit) areas – which can easily cause hazardous conditions.

LED bay lighting is the most energy-efficient option on the market. Specifically designed for larger spaces, these improve visibility and worker safety. LED bay fixtures are instant on and don’t lose life hours from constant on-off cycles like HID and fluorescent fixtures do. Therefore, they don’t need to be replaced as often, which cuts maintenance and replacement costs.
